What is phase and phase transition？

In materials science, a “phase” refers to a region that has the same structure, composition, and physical properties within a certain spatial range. Everyday examples include the ice, liquid, and gas phases of water. In materials, the face-centered cubic phase, body-centered cubic phase, and hexagonal close-packed phase in metals, different crystal forms in oxides, and the 1T and 2H phases in two-dimensional materials are all structural phases.

A phase determines how atoms are arranged, and also influences how electrons, ions, phonons, and defects move within a material. The same chemical composition can correspond to multiple phases, and the differences in properties between phases often arise from changes in atomic packing, bonding characteristics, and electronic structure.
